COLUMBUS, Neb. - After initially approving a septic system project, Lakeview Public Schools had to take a step back and re-evaluate the project after finding an issue with the soil.
The school uses a 50-plus year-old lagoon, which has not been holding water as well as it should, according to superintendent Aaron Plas.
To alleviate the problem, LPS awarded Kohl Construction Company the bid to replace the septic system for $117,000. But during percolation tests, they found that the soil does not drain water well enough and that they would have to spend an additional $185,000 to remove and replace the soil, in order to meet state standards.
Plas said that the soil issue was nobody's fault but was just something they couldn't notice until further along in the process.
They are now looking into various other options, including re-designing the lagoon, and have no immediate time table for their next decision on the issue.
