COLUMBUS - Angie Kruse got a pleasant surprise on Thursday, when she found out she had been selected as the Counselor of the Year for the State of Nebraska.
The National School Counselor Association recognizes a counselor at the Elementary, Middle School and High School levels, and Kruse was selected as the Middle School Counselor of the Year. Of the three winners, Kruse was then voted as the overall Counselor of the Year, and was surprised with the award on Thursday at the end of the school day.
NSCA Jerry Wiggins presented the award.
"When I saw him I though maybe, but I know it's American School Counselor Week anyway. So It was kind of like one of those things where I thought maybe he's just going to see all the winners, you know all three winners. Until he started talking that we choose one person, then I'm like, oh my gosh," says Kruse.
Kruse will now be nominated as a candidate for National Counselor of the Year.
"I think the biggest part is that she is always putting the students first. A real true advocate for students, and I think that shows in just her personality," says Wiggins.
Kruse says, "I just work with some great staff, and it's just not about me. I work with the other counselors, the staff here at Columbus Middle School, it's pretty amazing."
