Iowa man, 28, is sentenced to jail in 2017 crash that killed Nebraska motorcyclist

A 28-year-old Iowa man has been sentenced to more than eight months in jail for a crash last year that claimed the life of a motorcyclist. Michael E. Bauman of Rock Rapids was sentenced Thursday in Cass County, Nebraska, to 250 days in jail. He had pleaded no contest to misdemeanor motor-vehicle homicide in the death of Chris Badman, 47, of South Bend, Nebraska. Cass County Judge John Steinheider also fined Bauman $1,000 and revoked his driver’s license for one year. Investigators from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office said Badman was riding his motorcycle north on Nebraska Highway 43 about 9 p.m. on July 14, 2017, when a semitrailer truck driven by Bauman turned left into Badman’s path. Bauman told deputies that he couldn’t avoid the collision and tried to provide aid to Badman. The collision occurred south of Eagle. Prosecutors had argued that Bauman’s failure to yield the right of way or careless driving — or both — unintentionally caused Badman’s death.
