Hundreds Brave the Cold for Trunk or Treat in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Neb. - A few snowflakes and chilly conditions did not deter hundreds of little ones in Columbus on enjoying their Halloween. Columbus Middle School hosted Trunk or Treat on Tuesday, inviting kids in the area to pick up some candy from the trunk of several vehicles. The event was led by students and faculty of Columbus High School, specifically members of the Key Club, FBLA and Circle of Friends. Faculty member and event organizer Michelle Cruise says the students really took on a leadership role for the evening, but also got into the Halloween spirit. "It's really fun to watch the seniors and juniors intermix with (the little kids), and get all excited and some of them even dress up," says Cruise. The 7th annual event, which included near freezing temperatures and flurries, gave prizes to whomever had the best trunk, overall theme and best costume. New to this year was a student award as well. Cruise says they hold the event to thank the community for supporting public schools. "Because the community has given us so much by passing the bond issue and supporting us in a lot of different ways, so we thought this was one way we could give back," says Cruise.
