Gates Community Center Fundraiser Surpasses Goal

GATES–Custer County residents rise to the occassion time and time again when it comes to raising money for important causes. Earlier this month a fundraiser was held at the Gates Community Center to raise money for a new roof on the late 1930s brick schoolhouse.

With the goal of raising approximately $15,000, residents attended a fundraiser held on April 10. Gates Community Center, Inc. Treasurer Angela Burnett told KCNI/KBBN the event went well with a large crowd in attenance, a variety of silent auction items, many generous donations, and “lots of fun was had by all!”

Burnett said the money raised was well over the goal of the $15,000 roof estimate. Nineteen teams entered the corhole tournament and the champion team was Adam and Bereket Glendy. Reserve champion team was Quinten and Brent Myers.

Moving forward, Burnett said Gates Community Center, Inc. is in the process of studying all of their options. A meeting will be held after the annual Community Alumni Dinner scheduled for June 13 at 1 p.m. at the Community Center.

The brick schoolhouse served the Gates area students well for several decades, even better after restrooms and the gym were added. The facility continues to serve patrons by functioning as the Gates Community Center. Even during COVID-19, the center has seen some use. Damage from recent storms has caused the roof to leak and for the center to remain useful, the Gates Community Center Inc. is looking to replace roofing material on the brick schoolhouse for the cost of nearly $15,000 according to a letter from the organization.

If you were unable to attend the fundraiser, contributions can also be delivered by mail. Checks can be made payable to Gates Community Center, Inc. and sent to Treasurer Angela Burnett, 43790 Sargent Rd., Anselmo, NE 68813. Gates Community Center Inc. is a non-profit service organization and any donation is tax-deductible.
