OSCEOLA, Neb. - A Columbus woman who was accused of pocketing over $600 from a Polk County prisoner while she was employed there, was sentenced to jail and probation on Wednesday.
39-year-old Kristin Sealing was given 90 days in jail and two years of probation after being convicted of two misdemeanors, attempted theft and attempted tampering with a witness last month.
According to court records in April of last year, a man who was set to serve a prison term in Lincoln came to the Polk County jail to get processed and brought with him just under $1,800.
Documents say when he arrived in Lincoln, he had $600 less in cash.
Upon hearing of the issue, Sealing then called another jail employee working that day and told him to say the inmate had just under $1,200, according to the Nebraska State Patrol.
In an interview with NSP a few days later, they say Sealing got mad and abruptly quit her job with the jail after hearing there was incriminating video surveillance of the incident.
The inmate told authorities that he brought the cash to withdraw into his prison account.
Sealing, who was originally charged with a felony for tampering, may only have to serve 30 days in jail, as the final 60 days could be waived by the judge, if the probation office gives the recommendation that no further jail time is warranted.
Judge Rachel Daugherty also ordered Sealing to pay $600 in restitution.
