Former Platte County Employee Accused of Stealing Thousands of Dollars from County

COLUMBUS, Neb. - A former Platte County employee has been charged with three felonies after a special investigator accused her of stealing thousands from the county. 43-year-old Traci Nelsen of Monroe, is charged with three felonies related to a special investigation done by Madison County Attorney Joe Smith. Nelsen, who was in charge of the county's adult diversion program, is charged with theft by unlawful taking-over $5,000 and theft by deception-over $5,000, both 2A felonies, and also felony tampering with evidence, a lesser felony. Nelsen, who left her job in August, is accused of the crimes beginning on October 18th, 2014. She was not arrested on the allegations, instead Smith sent Nelsen a letter informing her of the charges. Smith was appointed, following an investigation by the Nebraska State Patrol, that was looking into the mishandling of finances within the counties adult diversion program. Smith was out for the day when News Channel Nebraska attempted to reach him. Nelsen will first appear in court on October 18th.
