Columbus City Council to Vote on New Police Chief on Tuesday

COLUMBUS, Neb. - The city of Columbus may soon have a new police chief after a vote from the council on Tuesday evening. Columbus Police Captain Chuck Sherer unanimously passed through the city's Civil Service Commission and it is now up to the city council's vote, which is usually a formality, to approve Sherer to be chief of police. According to the agenda item listed for the vote, Sherer has served on the CPD for 20 years and before that served as police chief in Schuyler for 18 years. In his role as captain, Sherer has managed the Patrol division and oversaw the city's animal control department and the Police Department's fleet. He attended the FBI National Academy in 2015 and has also taught criminal justice at Central Community College. If approved, Sherer will takeover for William Gumm, who recently retired.
