Children Trapped Under Rubble After Drunk Driver Crashes into Aparmtent

COLUMBUS - Miladys Nunez says she heard two loud thumps and her grandchildren screaming, after a drunk woman crashed into her apartment building on Monday. Columbus Police say the accident happened at about 1:39 p.m., when a drunk driver crashed the building just south of 19th street and 45th Avenue.  Nunez says she talked to the woman in the parking lot just 10 minutes before she crashed into the building. "She said that she was having issues with her son, with her grandson. So I gave her a hug, and I said do you want to come sit over here, I'm watching my grandkids, I can stay over here. One of my granddaughters brought her water and a water bottle, and we gave her water bottle, and she said no, that she had to go. She said that she had to go," said Nunez. Nunez says this is when she went back inside, and shortly later heard the vehicle crash into her neighbors residence. "By the time I heard it I was out here, trying to lift this thing, and we were screaming and we couldn't lift it. We went inside, went through the sliding door, and came out here, and I was trying to call 911 but I dropped the phone like 4 times, I was so nervous. The lady accelerated again and pinned my granddaughter more," said Nunez. Nunez' 6 and 4-year-old grandkids were trapped under rubble for a period of time and suffered minor injuries in the accident, according to police. The driver was transported to the hospital for injuries and was later arrested for DUI, says police.
