Broken Bow Teachers Receive High Praise

Broken Bow teachers received high praise during Monday’s School Board meeting.  Broken Bow Elementary Principal Kim Jonas, Special Education Director Nikki Altig, and Middle and High School Principal Rusty Kluender, took time to compliment all the current teaching staff and Ryan Hogue, Activities Director/Middle School and High School Assistant Principal, touched on the accomplishments of students and staff during the fall session.

Tracy Popp who represented the Broken Bow Music Boosters requested a verbal commitment from the Board to financially assist with the purchase of new band uniforms.  The estimated cost of the uniforms is $65,000-70,000 and the Music Boosters have raised $40,000. Popp said a verbal commitment would help in planning a timeline to place the order. The Board appeared in favor of making a commitment, but following further conversation tabled the issue. Board President Carl French said he was in favor of assisting with the uniform purchase due to the Music Booster’s efforts in raising money and the fact they are not asking for funds immediately. French indicated financial assistance would likely not come from this year’s budget.  Popp said the Music Boosters would work with the Board and provide updates on fundraising.

In other action items, the Board approved the 2018- 2019 contract with Sandhills Educational Services Coop and the 2018-2019 negotiations that include teachers’ job descriptions. A discussion was held concerning the Superintendent evaluation. Each Board member submitted separate evaluations that included scores and comments about the Superintendent’s performance. Some of the Board expressed concerns about the evaluation structure, especially that it failed to clarify needed improvements or establish goals. The Board will hold a work session on December 4th to discuss the evaluation and other matters.

The next regular meeting will be held December 18th at 7:30 p.m. The Board expects to vote whether or not to extend Superintendent Bailey’s contract at that time. The meeting will be open to the public.
