Broken Bow girls golf team braves bad weather conditions at Class C state tournament

Golfers battled bad weather elements in day one of the Class C girls state golf tournament at Lake Maloney golf course in North Platte. Strong winds, off and on rain and even a brief mix of sleet and snow made for a challenging opening round. In spite of the weather conditions, some very good scores were posted. Ricki Hickstein of Chadron leads the way as she shot an even par 72. That is 8 shots better than Kira Mestl of Ogallala who is second at 8 over and Abby Cornelius of Cozad is tied for third with an opening round 82. Kailey Johnson of Broken Bow put together a very solid round of 91 which is tied for tenth headed into day 2. Johnson shot a 46 on the front nine and 45 on the back. Johnson is scheduled to tee off at 12:14 Tuesday afternoon for her final round. Gracie Williams of Broken Bow shot an opening round of 98 and is tied for 30th after day one. She is scheduled to tee off at 11:18 am on Tuesday. Other Broken Bow scores included : Madison Jackson a 110. She will start her second round on the back nine and is scheduled to tee off at 11:02 am ; Joelle Sanger shot a 113 and will tee off at 11:34 am while Graycee Oeltjen finished with a 114 and is scheduled to tee off at 11:42 am. In the team standings, defending state champion Ogallala has the lead after day one with a team total 363 and Chadron is second with a 382. Broken Bow is currently tied with Columbus Scotus for sixth with a team total 412. Broken Bow coach Amy Taylor told KCNI/KBBN sports that she was very pleased with the girls’ performance on Monday especially considering the adverse weather conditions.
