BEATRICE - Hurricane Harvey's devastating impact affected thousands of people and animals, leaving them homeless. The Beatrice Humane Society has offered a safe environment to those animals that were in shelters that experienced either flooding or crowding. Some Texas shelters have taken in stray pets, rescued from the water.
Beatrice Humane Society Shelter Director Bryce Caulk says, "They're actually going to hold those stray animals for 31 days, so that the owners can come looking for them."
As for some of those shelter pets, they have been brought here to be adopted.
"We had Tall Tails Rescue and Transport, that is a rescue out of Weatherford, Texas. They drove up from Texas late last night."
The animals arrived on Wednesday afternoon and Beatrice residents were quick to welcome them. Several puppies had already been adopted during News Channel Nebraska's visit.
"They brought 12 small dogs and puppies, as well as a ferret."
For those not interested in adopting, the Beatrice Humane Society welcomes help in other ways.
Caulk says, "Socialize. Help us clean. We could use donations, not just monetary, but cards to places like PetSmart, Tractor Supply, Wal-Mart."
The animals were adjusting to their new surroundings on Wednesday, being washed and cared for by the Beatrice Humane Society staff.
