BROKEN BOW—The city square welcomes the new Arrow Hotel East to the downtown business district. On April 1, 2007 the south side of the square was overcome with the devastating fire that engulfed the historic Dierks Building (circa 1889) and took with it six local businesses. Thirteen central Nebraska fire departments appeared on the scene and the town watched the fire smolder for a week. Tourism Director John Ricks stated that when inside one of the rooms, it feels like you are in New York or Chicago. “It’s just luxurious. And you know, adding 20 rooms to a community this size is going to have huge economic impact because the apex of spending for a tourist when they come to a destination is that hotel stay,” Ricks said. Senator Matt Williams, John Ricks, and a crowd of nearly 100 congregated in the lower level parking area on Wednesday afternoon to celebrate the grand opening and ribbon cutting of the innovative hotel that combines the history of the original Arrow with modern amenities. Owners RJ and Anne Thomas have been married for almost 30 years and said this project has been a dream since only a few months after the fire. In the last two years, they have made that dream a reality. “If you just have dreamers, nothing gets done. But when you have people like RJ and Anne, and other people like we have in Broken Bow, things get done. And that’s what this is all about,” Senator Williams said. RJ and Anne, along with Wes and Cathy Province and Matt Thomas, aimed to design the building as a sister to the original and make it look like it could have been on the square from the beginning. Architect Larry Nelson oversaw the project, Chief Construction took the lead in building, with the help of numerous local businesses to finish the project. “The businesses of Broken Bow have been fantastic and great to work with. The Arrow Hotel is really Broken Bow’s Hotel, I think. It was built by the citizens of Broken Bow—we’re just caretakers. It’s a piece of this town,” Anne Thomas said. The two-story building features 20 rooms, 10 facing the square with a balcony, a combination of double rooms and suite-style rooms. Guests can also enjoy laundry facilities, a check-in kiosk, an exercise room, elevator, covered parking, a business center, and Wi-Fi. Combined, the Arrow and Arrow East Hotels house 46 rooms.
