DAVID CITY - David City Aquinas Seniors are using their Senior Project, to provide a sustainable source of clean water for Nigerian Mothers and Children in need.
Father Ben Holdren says a friend of his, Joseph Williams, founded the International Missionary Foundation, which gave them a connection to help different groups of people in need. Holden says Williams is working with a group to set up a hospital in a very poor section of Nigeria.
"The infant mortality rate, is so high over there, 1 in 10 babies dying, that he wanted to do something about it. So, they started a hospital there, and they're going to provide free health care for all the mothers and babies. We heard about this and we wanted to do something, and he said they have a need for a water purification system," says Holdren.
The Seniors decided they would raise money to purchase the water purification system for the area, and Holdren says the fundraising effort has made a strong push. Holdren says they need to raise $3,800 in total, but says they made a big dent in the goal with a burger bash at Tuesday night's basketball game, raising just over $2,500.
"To be able to find the poor, you know who just really need a hand up, who just aren't able to accomplish that, because of corruption, depression and everything. For us to be able to do something, you know it's just an awesome thing," says Holdren.
