A 19-year-old man drowned Sunday at Lake Babcock, north of Columbus, Nebraska, the Platte County Sheriff’s Office said.
Authorities were called to the lake about 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Sheriff’s deputies were told that a person had fallen into the water and a second person went in to help the first person get out. Nicholas Rodriguez of Wayne drowned while trying to help his friend, officials said.
Other people were able to rescue the first person from the lake.
A search crew found Rodriguez’s body about 5 p.m. Sunday. The Platte County Dive Team was assisted by the Waterloo Volunteer Fire Department, Nebraska Game and Parks officials and the Columbus Fire Department.
