1 dead after truck strikes two assisting with flat tire along U.S. Highway 77 Friday evening

One person is dead after a pickup truck struck two assisting with a flat tire along U.S. Highway 77 south of Lincoln early Friday evening.

The truck, a 2010 GMC Sierra K1500, driven by a 74-year-old Beatrice man, was traveling south on U.S. 77 near West Hallam Road when it collided with the two individuals around 7:45 p.m. They were helping a car stopped on the west shoulder of the road north of Cortland.

One was pronounced dead at the scene. Karen Meyer, 61, of rural Cortland was taken to a hospital in a helicopter and is in critical but stable condition, according to a Lancaster County Sheriff press release.

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Department reported the person killed in the accident is identified as Vonnell Briggs.   The driver of the pickup was 74-year-old Kenneth Lineweber, of Beatrice.

The investigation is ongoing and an autopsy has been ordered.
