Nebraska wrestlers, gymnasts sweep Tumble N’ Rumble

LINCOLN — The upper weights led the Nebraska wrestling team to another comeback win on Saturday night.

The 11th-ranked Huskers won five of the final six matches to earn a 22-12 win over No. 14 Northern Iowa at the Devaney Center.

The win comes six days after the Huskers erased a 14-4 deficit by winning the last six matches in a 26-14 Big Ten win over Northwestern.

On Saturday, with three matchups of ranked opponents coming up, Nebraska trailed 9-8 midway through the dual.

At 165 pounds, Nebraska’s Isaiah White, ranked sixth nationally, pulled out a 2-1 win over No. 12 Bryce Steiert. It was the ninth straight win for White, who started his season 1-3.

Northern Iowa moved back in front when eighth-ranked Taylor Lujan defeated No. 9 Mikey Labriola 10-5 at 174, while sophomore Taylor Venz then put the Huskers ahead to stay.

Fifth-ranked Venz and No. 6 Drew Foster were tied 5-5 after the opening period. But Venz moved in front 8-5 in the second and held on for an 8-6 decision.

Eric Schultz (197) and heavyweight David Jensen closed the dual with wins for the Huskers. Jensen, who was sidelined early in the season, improved to 10-0 with his technical fall. Jensen matched his win total from a year ago when he went 10-11.

The wrestling dual was part of Nebraska’s Tumble N’ Rumble event, which featured the NU women’s gymnastics team competing in a dual at the same time as the wrestling dual. The event drew a crowd of 4,699.

Nebraska also won the gymnastics dual, edging Washington 195.550-195.250.

Taylor Houchin led the Huskers as she scored a 9.900 on the bars, 9.875 on the floor exercise and 9.800 on the beam. Sierra Hassel finished with a career-best 9.900 on the beam.

The Nebraska wrestling team will hit the road next weekend, taking on Maryland on Friday before facing top-ranked Penn State on Sunday.
