Former Nebraska coach Mike Riley will work for Oregon State at a considerable discount — $50,004 per year, according to documents obtained by the Oregonian.
That means NU is still on the hook for almost all of Riley’s buyout. Riley’s salary will mitigate his $6.63 million buyout — to be paid in $170,000 per month increments — but not by much. Riley’s salary in future years could further mitigate the payout if he were, for example, to take a head coaching job at market rate.
Riley was hired in December to be assistant head coach on Jonathan Smith’s staff at Oregon State.
Other assistants who have taken jobs — Donte Williams at Oregon and Trent Bray at Oregon State, for example — will have their payouts mitigated by their salaries, as well.
