Nebraska men’s golf coach Bill Spangler and men’s tennis coach Kerry McDermott will not return after their contracts expire this summer, Athletic Director Bill Moos announced in a press release Wednesday.
“I would like to thank Coach Spangler and Coach McDermott for their dedicated years of outstanding service to the University of Nebraska, and wish them the best in their future endeavors,” Moos said in the release.
A national search for their replacements will begin immediately.
McDermott had an annual salary of $70,000 and Spangler made $65,000.
McDermott was hired in 1982 and had the second-longest tenure of any coach in the athletic department. The men’s tennis team went 11-15 overall and 1-10 in the Big Ten last season.
Men’s tennis last had an individual NCAA qualifier in 2002 and a doubles NCAA qualifier in 2012, though it was 1993 before that. It has one individual and one doubles conference champion since 2000. The program has also not finished higher than eighth since its first season in the Big Ten six years ago.
Spangler had been the NU men’s golf coach since 2001. The squad finished 11th in the 14-team Big Ten tournament last month, and only one individual placed better than 40th.
Positive results were scarce during Spangler’s 17-year run. The Huskers’ best finish under him was sixth — in 2005-06 and 2006-07 — and those were also the only instances when they advanced to regionals, where they finished 22nd and tied for 21st, respectively.
The team last won a tournament during the 2012-13 season and has recent conference finishes of 12th (2017), 13th (2016) and 13th (2015).
