CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — No. 20 Nebraska and No. 12 Illinois each won five matches during NU’s Big Ten dual opener Friday night.
The match ended in a 17-17 tie, and Illinois was awarded the win by earning a criteria point for finishing with more match points (51-49).
The dual was tied 11-11 through six matches when Illinois’ Emery Parker was able to rally for a 9-7 decision over No. 6 Taylor Venz at 184 pounds. Venz led 7-1 midway through the third period before Parker got a takedown and two near-falls.
NU won the next two matches as Eric Schultz got a takedown in overtime for a 4-2 win at 197 and then heavyweight David Jensen got an early four-point near-fall in a 7-2 win. That gave NU a 17-14 lead, but Illinois’ Travis Piotrowski defeated Mitchell Maginnis 4-2 at 125 in the final match.
