Husker running back Maurice Washington’s scheduled plea hearing Wednesday was continued to July, a court spokesman said.
Washington, 19, is accused of sending a 10-second video to an ex-girlfriend depicting the girl, then 15, performing oral sex. Washington was not involved in the recording of the video or the sex act.
Washington’s public defender, Andres Del Alcazar, appeared on his behalf Wednesday in Santa Clara County Superior Court.
Benjamin Rada, a spokesman for the court, said a request for more information is pending in the case, prompting the continuation of the hearing until July 25.
Husker football practices begin in the first part of August.
John Ball, Washington’s Lincoln criminal defense attorney, is not licensed in California but continues to communicate with prosecutors and represent Washington, but the Santa Clara Public Defender’s Office will represent Washington in the courtroom.
Washington faces a felony charge of possession of a video of a person under 18 engaging in or simulating sexual conduct. He also is charged with one misdemeanor count of sharing a recording without the person’s consent.
Authorities said Washington and the girl exchanged texts in March 2018 after the girl congratulated him on going to Nebraska to play football. After she spurned his romantic advances and said she just wanted to be friends, he texted the video, recorded in 2016, to the girl, court documents allege.
On June 4, Washington was cited on suspicion of possessing drug paraphernalia when campus police received a call about a marijuana smell from his dorm room. Police said no marijuana was found, but there was marijuana residue in a pipe that was in Washington’s possession. NU’s athletic department said it was aware of the situation and handling it internally.
While Washington is expected to be a key contributor next fall, he was a limited participant in the Huskers’ spring practices and didn’t play in Nebraska’s spring game.
