Former Nebraska center Brady Heiman is transferring to South Dakota.
“I have a good relationship with the coaches and know a lot of the players,” Heiman said. “They see me as not a traditional 5 and being able to pick and pop along with being able to move off the block.”
The Platteview graduate left the Husker program after one season. He was one of several players told not to return by new coach Fred Hoiberg.
Heiman appeared in 30 games his freshman season, averaging 8.5 minutes and 1.8 points per game. The 6-foot-11, 215-pound center shot 59.5% from the floor and 29.4% from the foul line.
Heiman heard from several Division I programs after his name was entered in the transfer portal. He settled on three schools — UNO, South Dakota and Colorado State — because they were close to home.
He ultimately chose the Coyotes.
Out of high school, Heiman picked NU over scholarship offers from 10 D-I programs, including South Dakota and UNO.
South Dakota recently received a commitment from Heiman’s AAU teammate Kanon Koster (Kearney).
“I think I am going into a good situation with me, Kanon and AJ Plitzuweit, who are going to sit out next year,” Heiman said.
Heiman, an All-Nebraska selection in 2018, will have three years of eligibility remaining and could be eligible immediately if he has a waiver approved by the NCAA. He could also choose to sit out a transfer year and begin playing for the Coyotes in 2020.
