NEBRASKA CITY – A 27-year-old Syracuse woman is spearheading a flood relief campaign in Otoe County.
Kayla Wilson set up at Tractor Supply on 11th Street with a hand-written sign, a friend and an idea that Nebraskans are in need.
Wilson: “Our state is in a state of crisis right now. We were hit with a disastrous flood through the entire state.”
People began pulling over in their cars right away. One couple donated a case of water although they themselves had lost their home in Plattsmouth.
Wilson: “I’ve raised quite a bit, as you can see right now. The community has come together and they are actually proud of everything we’ve accomplished so far.”
Thousands of dollars of items were donated in the first four hours, including a stack of first aid supplies, medicine, blankets and totes loaded with shampoo, hygiene products and tooth paste.
Wilson: “There’s thousands and thousands of people that have lost their homes to all of this flooding. There are displaced animals, there are people who have lost their lives, their land, their cattle … everything. And I want to try and make a difference and help get everything back that they lost.”
Wilson said she plans to continue with donation points along Highway 2 from Nebraska City to Syracuse.
