Snow began falling Friday night across the region, dropping 12 inches in Hamburg, 11.8″ in Hamburg and 9 inches in Nebraska City and Shenandoah.
North winds are forecast to approach 10-14 MPH.
Snow amounts were expected to be higher the farther south and east you go, so fans heading to Kansas City for the Chiefs’ playoff game Saturday should set aside an extra hour for the trip, said Jonathan Welsh of the weather service’s Kansas City-area office. Kansas City received 7.2 inches as of 6 a.m.
Travel became difficult especially on untreated roadways. The Department of Roads said heavy, wet snow had completely covered roads in southeast Nebraska, southwest Iowa and northwest Missouri.
Traveling was hazardous and, in some spots, impossible. LaDonna Gauchat was traveling in Fremont County (where towing services have been prohibited, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation) Saturday morning and became stuck along the roadway.
“If you don’t have to go anywhere stay home,” she said. “The roads here in Fremont County haven’t been touched (by road crews). I’m sitting in the middle of the road trying to get unstuck, because the snow is as high as my door. Please be safe out there.”
She was able to get free and return home.
If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency, according to the weather service.
They say power outages have been reported due to the heavy nature of the snow. In addition, due to the heavy and wet nature of the snow, shoveling will be unusually difficult.
