OMAHA – A Lourdes Central Catholic High School graduate received a big honor Friday night at the Nebraska High School Theater Academy Showcase in Omaha.

Piper Monson was selected to represent Nebraska at the Jimmy Awards next week in New York City. Kearney’s Drew Sinnard will also attend.

The Jimmy Award, named in honor of legendary Broadway theatre owner and producer James M. Nederlander, honors the best performance by an actor and actress and is awarded annually to two grand prize winners selected from a group of student performers representing the participating professional theatres. Winners are selected by a panel of industry experts.

Monson was also selected as an “Outstanding Actress.”

The winner of the Jimmy Award will be announced at the National High School Musical Theatre Awards. The NHSMTA is a national celebration of outstanding student achievement in high school musical theatre that recognizes individual artistry in vocal, dance and acting performance. It also honors teachers and their schools’ commitment to performing arts education.

Monson and other Lourdes students participated in the week-long showcase and performed select melodies from their performance of the “My Fair Lady” musical, a performance that earned them “Outstanding Show” this year.

Luke Partsch, who earned an “Outstanding Actor” award this week, says the experience was incredible.

“There were so many outstanding opportunities that I’ve had that I would not get anywhere else. I’d have to say the best part, in my opinion, would be all the friends I made and the time I spent with them.”

Cathy Shawhand received an “Outstanding Supporting Actress” award.
