LINCOLN — A new head football coach will be pacing the Memorial Stadium sidelines in 2018.
The Univerdity of Nebraska Athletic Department has announced that Mike Riley was fired this morning. A press conference is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
“Mike Riley has brought tremendous professionalism and energy to the Nebraska football program, but unfortunately, those attributes have not translated to on-field success,” Huskers Athletic Director Bill Moos said. “After a thorough review of all aspects of our football program, I have chosen to move in a different direction.”
Riley is gone after going 19-19 overall and 12-14 in the Big Ten over three seasons. The 64-year-old was hired by former Athletic Director Shawn Eichorst on December 4, 2014 after spending 14 seasons as head coach of Oregon State.
Riley is the fourth Huskers head coach fired in the past 14 years, following Bo Pelini, Bill Callahan and Frank Solich.
The firing is the first major action taken by Moos, who was hired as A.D. on October 23rd.
The Huskers finished their 2017 season on Friday. They lost 56-14 to Iowa completing a four-game skid to end the year. The Huskers will not make a bowl game for the first time since the 2007 season and finish with four wins for the first time since 1961.
