NEBRASKA CITY – Nebraska City High School was colored in blue for autism awareness on Wednesday and the “Circle of Friends” group presented B103 and Otoe County Country with two “Autism Speaks” t-shirts, created and designed by students in the Life Skills class.
Life Skills Teacher Tiffany Tharp says they’ve been spending time educating students and faculty about the disorder that affects 1 in 59 children in the United States, according to Centers for Disease Control.
“Exactly what autism is, what it looks like, and get them to understand that they’re normal just like everyone else: want friends, want to be included.”
Faculty and students are watching autism awareness videos and participating in sensory activities throughout “Autism Awareness Month” in April. They will celebrate autism awareness every Wednesday with different themes each week, including “Light it up Blue,” wearing sports apparel (team up to accomplish anything), “Hats off to Autism” (hat day), and “Pajama Day” (helping make everyone’s dreams come true).
“Everyone wants to be included. Everyone. They do too. That’s the importance of it.”
The recognition is part of the “Light it up Blue” campaign, a country-wide movement to bring awareness to autism.
