DESHLER - Last season, the Deshler Dragons fell just short of the Six-Man football playoffs. Head Coach Carson Klute is looking to get the Dragons over the top this year.
Their 2016 season was the third year of six man football for Deshler, and featured two more wins than the two previous years combined.
Despite winning five games, the Dragons lost two of their final three contests and fell short of the postseason. Coach Klute felt like he learned a lot from last season.
"That it really does matter each and every play that you execute. A couple of our games really came down to one or two plays, and that one or two plays made the difference of continuing our season and ending it."
According to the Dragons, in order for them to take that next step into the postseason, they have to be able to stop their opponents' run game.
"We need to work on our run defense because we didn't really have anyone pass for a lot of yards on us, but we had a lot of teams get a lot of running yards that we didn't do a good job stopping," said Senior Brady Fangmeyer.
This is a special year for Coach Klute and the senior class. Deshler began playing six man in 2014, which was Klute's first year with the program and the seniors' freshman year.
"I was just talking to my wife about that the other day. It's a special group because you've seen them since freshman year. They've grown and matured and become not only good football players, but good people, too. It's special.
Deshler begins their season against Santee on September 1st.
