Bus driver saves students from fire

HAYES CENTER, NE (10/11 Now) – A bus driver is credited for saving the lives of seven students on his Hayes Center bus on Monday.

Superintendent Tony Primavera said the bus driver was in between stops on a country route when the bus caught fire.

Primavera said the bus driver thought he smelled burning wires.

He was about 50 yards away from the next stop and the smell became stronger, so he evacuated the students.

Primavera says the driver tried to get a fire extinguisher, but the smoke was too heavy and the bus then caught on fire.

According to Primavera, the bus driver handled well and no injuries were reported.
