Snow will continue to fall this morning throughout the morning commute, forecasters said, as the eastern Nebraska and western Iowa stays in a winter weather advisory until 6 p.m.
The National Weather Service expects slightly higher snow totals than predicted in some parts of the metro area. While most of Douglas County’s range is still at 2 to 4 inches, west and south of Sarpy County may bring up to 5 or 6 inches, especially in Lincoln, Columbus or Albion.
Commuters will see snow in the early morning, until it turns to patchy freezing drizzle — potentially causing icy conditions — by late morning and ending this afternoon.
City crews are out plowing snow as roads were slick early this morning. Vehicles on Interstate 480 were sliding and going as slow as 10 miles per hour to avoid crashing.
Nearly all metro-area schools have closed today — Omaha Public Schools, Millard, Westside, Papillion-La Vista, Elkhorn, Bellevue, Gretna, Ralston, Council Bluffs, Lincoln, Plattsmouth, St. John the Baptist, Springfield Platteview and Omaha Catholic schools are closed today because of the snow.
Classes at the University of Nebraska at Omaha are cancelled until noon, but the campus is open and shuttles are running normally. The Metropolitan Community College campus will open at noon and Nebraska Methodist College will start at 10 a.m. Midland University is closed Thursday.
Sarpy County offices will start at 10 a.m., but the courthouse will continue its normal schedule.
Snow and rain are expected for Friday evening into Saturday. The chance for snow starts Friday evening and then switches over to mostly rain Saturday, forecasters said. The storm could finish out as a rain/snow mix Saturday evening.
Another storm system moves through early next week.
