The risk of severe weather for this evening has increased to ‘Enhanced’ for a number of counties in central Nebraska including Custer, Garfield, Wheeler, Valley, Greeley, Sherman, Howard, Hall, Buffalo, eastern Loup, and eastern Dawson.
Enhanced risk means numerous severe storms are possible with some longer-lived and intense storms.
Severe weather is possible both late this afternoon and evening and late Thursday afternoon and evening. The main hazards are large hail, damaging winds, and frequent lightning. Be sure that you have multiple ways to receive warnings and weather information. If you have outdoor plans, be sure to plan ahead if the weather takes a turn.
The heat advisory will continue until 8 PM tonight. Heat indices of 100-103F will continue through the afternoon. Drink plenty of water even if not thirsty, wear lightweight and light-colored clothing if possible, take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning, and check on the elderly.
