CUSTER COUNTY—With even more entries than last year, the Custer County Fair is sure to be big in 2019! Custer County 4-H Aide Colleen Peterson told KCNI/KBBN that the extension office staff has received nearly 4,000 entries for this year’s events.
The Custer County Fair kicked off with events on July 18 and an entry day on July 24, with the main events scheduled to take place Friday, July 26 through Thursday, August 1 at the Custer County Fairgrounds.
Approximately 465 members are currently enrolled in Custer County 4-H and the 4-H activities include clothing construction, shooting, dog show, food, gardening, cut flowers, art and science, wood working, team roping, bronc riding, goat, sheep, beef, swine, horses, small animals, sheep, and much more.
Preparations for the annual events are made all year round but Peterson says she loves working with the young people and the volunteers who help make this upcoming week possible.
“Besides all of the 4-Hers I’d really like to take a moment to thank our donors. We have a lot of award donors that we just couldn’t put on our shows without those award donors,” Peterson said in an interview with KCNI/KBBN. “It takes so many volunteers to help make the interview judging and these shows go very smoothly and I kind of think that Custer County has some of the best volunteers that there are so I’d like to thank those people.”
After 39 years of experience, Peterson says her favorite thing about seeing students go through 4-H is their success.
“You know, a lot of 4-Hers will pick a 4-H project and they make it their career. I’ve seen a lot of young people that have participated in a project, love it, and they go on to either be a seamstress or a photographer or a livestock producer and that’s just really fun to see,” Peterson said.
Entries were due June 28 and events are already underway with the 4-H Style Judging, Clothing Construction Judging, and Fashion Show having taken place July 18 at the E-Free Church in Broken Bow.
Three senior stylists were selected to represent Custer County at the State Fair. Champion was Katie Olson, Reserve Champion was Hannah Pearson, and also selected was Darla Nichols.
For the Junior Models, Grand Champion was Ada Hornung and Reserve Champion was Emma Olson.
