FAIRBURY – For the 18th year in a row, Ol Red 99-5 and KGMT Radio once again held their Free Thanksgiving meal on Thanksgiving at the Elks Club in Fairbury. The annual Free Thanksgiving Meal always draws hundreds of people from around the area who might not have a place to go for the holiday, don’t want to prepare a big meal, or simply can’t afford it.
Elva Smith of Fairbury comes down to the meal every year and thinks it’s a great thing for the community.
“There is a need for it definitely, cause some of us don’t have families around here. It’s a place to go and meet other people, so it’s a very good deed.”
This year 344 total meals were served to people from 22 different cities and towns including families from as far away as Sun City, Arizona and St. Louis, Missouri. The event is free and open to the public, but some still want to donate. This year $1,032 was raised in donations. That money will be split and donated to the Hope Crisis Center, Blue Valley Community Action Food Pantry, & new delivery coolers will be purchased for the Senior Diners who deliver Meals on Wheels.
Thank you to all the people and sponsors that made this event happen.
