September is National Preparedness Month, and the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is encouraging Nebraskans to take steps to prepare for emergencies and disasters that can happen at any time. Most recently, wildfires have significantly impacted communities across the state.
“The best time to prepare for an emergency is before it happens,” said NEMA Assistant Director Erv Portis. “Taking a few minutes to make a plan and gather essential supplies today can help you and your family respond more safely tomorrow.”
NEMA says an emergency supply kit is one of the easiest ways to prepare. Nebraskans should consider having one at home, at work, and in their vehicles.
Items that kids should include:
- At least one gallon of water per person per day for three days
- A three-day supply of non-perishable food and a manual can opener
- First aid supplies and necessary medications or medical items for the entire family
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- Phone chargers and a portable power bank
- Pet supplies
- Important family documents stored electronically or in a waterproof, portable container
Local community food banks may be a resource for assistance in putting together a basic emergency kit for families experiencing food insecurity.
Once a kid is assembled, it should be stored in a safe but accessible location that everyone in the household is aware of. Families are encouraged to take time to discuss their emergency plays, including how they will communicate and where they will go if they need to evacuate.
Throughout the month, NEMA plans on sharing preparedness tips, reminders, and resources on their social media pages on Facebook and X.
