He then attended Kearney State College for Pre-Veterinary for two years. Life changed when he was drafted into the United States Army. He was sent to Fort Chaffee Maneuver Training Center in Fort Smith, AR. He had medical training at Brooks Army Medical in San Antonia for two months. From there he was sent to Fort Lewis, WA to be shipped out for Korea. His duty was with the 52nd Field Artillery Battalion of the 24th Armor Division as a field medic in the DMZ zone.

Gary enjoyed ranching, hunting, and fishing with his family and friends. Sunday afternoons were special because his brother Wendell and two friends belonged to a Saddle Club and would compete with other Saddle Clubs in Custer County.
