Funeral Services for Donald Hoobler, age 86

July 12, 1936 - September 2, 2022

Donald Rex Hoobler, 86, of Canon City, Colorado passed away on September 2, 2022, in his home with his wife, Lotus, holding his hand by his side. Rex was born on July 12, 1936, in Loup County, Nebraska to Roy and Ruth (Hall) Hoobler. 

Rex graduated from Valley Springs High School in Arkansas in 1954. He went on to attend Telegraphy School in Pueblo, CO where he met his wife, Lotus. Rex joined the Army in 1954 and proudly served his country for 3 years. In 1956 he and Lotus were married in Albuquerque, New Mexico. While attending Arkansas Polytech College in Russellville, Arkansas Rex worked as a radio announcer and graduated from college in 1963. Rex began his career as a Federal Civil Servant for the Department of the Army in 1965. His job postings took him to Arizona, Germany, and Virginia where he retired in 1993. 

After retirement Rex and Lotus moved to Canon City, Colorado. Rex served the community as a member of the Lions Club from 1999 – 2022, rising as high as District Governor. He dedicated much of his time to the Rocky Mountain Lion’s Eye Bank and the Colorado Lion’s Camp in Woodland Park, Colorado. Rex also drove the Golden Age Center shuttle for many years. He was an avid fruit and vegetable gardener and enjoyed sharing the fruits of his labor with many friends and neighbors. He loved square dancing, bowling, his country, and his family. Rex delivered his delicious homemade muffins to many local businesses and became known as the “Muffin Man”. Rex had a great sense of humor, with a grin on his face and ornery gleam in his eyes. He was loved by many and will be missed greatly. 

Rex is preceded in death by parents Roy and Ruth Hoobler, and daughter DawnMari. 

Rex is survived by his wife of 65 years Lotus Hoobler, daughter Renee Nelson, son Ron (Dawn) Hoobler, sister Marilyn Kisner, and his lifelong best friend and brother from another mother Herman Wilmoth. 

Memorial services will be Saturday, October 1, 2022, at 10:30 am at the Sargent Community Center in Sargent, NE with Pastor Marty Robbins officiating. Inurnment will be in the Moulton Cemetery.
