The 67th Shrine Bowl is scheduled for this Saturday in Kearney. The Shrine Bowl of Nebraska is considered by many as one of the state’s premier high school all-star sports events. Since its inception in 1958, the Nebraska Shrine Bowl All Star Football Game has annually donated more than two million dollars to the Shriners Children’s healthcare system. The event showcases some of the top football talent from across the state featuring recent high school graduates. Several of whom will be continuing their football careers at the college level.
The game will once again feature a battle between north and south. Longtime Sargent and now Twin Loup head football coach Mike Kozeal will be among the assistant coaches for the North team. For the last 27 years, Kozeal has served as the head coach of the Twin Loup Wolves (Sargent, Loup County Coop) and before that the Sargent Bulldogs. He led the Sargent Bulldogs to a state football championship in 2011 and is a four-time state runner up with Sargent and Twin Loup combined.
Broken Bow’s Cal Wells will be among the players to suit up for the North team in this year’s game. Cal received first team all-state recognition for his efforts on the defensive line for the Indians. He tallied over 200 tackles throughout his high school career.
Noah Shoemaker of Cozad will be among those playing for the South team. Noah played quarterback for the Haymakers and threw for over 1,900 yards and ran for 900 yards. He also had 25 passing touchdowns and 17 rushing touchdowns for Cozad. Shoemaker
earned first team all-state honors from the Lincoln Journal Star and Omaha World Herald.
Team practices are underway for this weekend’s game. The Shrine Bowl will take place on Saturday, June 7th at Ron and Carol Cope Stadium / Foster Field on the campus of the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
