State Wrestling – Final Day Area Recap / Wells of Broken Bow and Jones of SEM Win State Titles

The 2025 NSAA boys state wrestling championships came to a conclusion on Saturday.  Broken Bow’s Cal Wells became a two time state champion winning the Class C 215 lb. championship.  Wells was dominant in the championship match winning by fall over 53 match winner Cooper Stokebrand of Tri County.  The fall came at 1:59 into the match.  Wells finishes his senior season undefeated at 53-0 and becomes the second wrestler in Broken Bow program history to be a three time state finalist and two time state champion joining Lathan Duda in those categories.  Broken Bow finished 12th in the Class C team standings.  The Class C team title went to Battle Creek who finished one point ahead of Minden who was second.

Maddox Jones of SEM claimed the state championship at 175 lbs. in Class D.  Jones won by fall in the opening round and quarterfinals followed by a 7-3 decision win in the semifinals to advance to the final.  Jones opponent in the finals was Sutton’s Griffin Bergen.  Jones would get the win by fall at 3:06 into the match.  Jones concludes his senior season with an overall record of 48-1.

Dawson Mason of South Loup was the state runner up in Class D at 132 lbs.  Mason faced Burwell’s Drew Dawe in the championship match.  It was a tight match throughout with Dawe holding for a 5-3 decision win.  Mason finishes his senior season with an overall record of 44-4.  Dawe, a sophomore, finishes the year at 44-5.

Other medal winners from the KCNI/KBBN coverage area included:
Cazen Smith of Twin Loup 4th at 150 lbs. Class D (3rd Place Match – Gatlin Reimers (Palmer) 33-3 won by decision over Cazen Smith (Twin Loup) 50-13 (Dec 3-0)

Wyatt Stieb of Arcadia/Loup City 5th at 190 lbs. Class D (5th Place Match – Wyatt Stieb (Arcadia/Loup City) 35-7 won by fall over Kreyton Wiese (Wauneta-Palisade) 31-9 (Fall 2:18)

Andy Cash of Ansley/Litchfield 3rd at 285 lbs. Class D (3rd Place Match – Andy Cash (Ansley-Litchfield) 32-12 won by fall over Kenan Hasenauer (Pleasanton) 33-17 (Fall 1:35)

Caden Zutavern of Sandhills/Thedford 5th at 285 lbs. Class D (5th Place Match – Caden Zutavern (Sandhills/Thedford) 41-10 won by medical forfeit over Caleb Sharman (High Plains Community) 43-15 (M. For.)

In other area notes, Burwell claimed the Class D team title with 114 points.  Along with Dawe, Brody Jensen was a state champion for Burwell winning the 113 lb. Class D state championship for the Longhorns.  Other medalists for Burwell included Austin Mayfield 4th at 138, Trentin Brown 3rd at 157, and Cale Buss 3rd at 190.

Cozad finished with three medalists in Class B.  Drake Hasbrouck 6th at 138, Aaron Wilson third at 150, and Brock Malcom was 3rd at 165.
