State Wrestling Day Two – Area Recap

Day two of the NSAA boys state wrestling championships took place Friday at the CHI Health Center in Omaha. The day was highlighted by the Friday night session which featured the championship semifinals in all classes as well as third round consolation matches. Recapping some of the area highlights, Dawson Mason of South Loup advanced to the Class D 132 lb. championship final. Mason won by a 4-2 decision over Gavin Patterson of Wilcox-Hildreth in the semifinals. Mason will wrestle Drew Dawe of Burwell for the 132 lb. championship on Saturday.  Burwell is third in the Class D team standings after Friday.  Along with Dawe, Burwell advanced Brody Jensen to the finals at 113 lbs.  Austin Mayfield (138), Trentin Brown (157), and Cale Buss (190) will wrestle in the consolation semifinals for the Longhorns.

Maddox Jones of SEM advanced to the Class D 175 lb. championship match.  Jones faced Jordan Timmerman of Guardian Angels CC in the semifinals.  Jones advanced to the final with a 7-3 decision win.  Jones will face Griffin Bergen of Sutton in the finals on Saturday.

Cal Wells of Broken Bow remained undefeated on the season improving to 52-0 with a 7-0 decision win over Colt Meyer of Ord.  Wells advances to the state finals for the third consecutive year and will face Cooper Stokebrand of Tri County who is 53-3 on the season.

Wyatt Stieb of Arcadia/Loup City wrestled in the Class D semifinals at 190 lbs.  Stieb faced Coy Vrbka of Shelby-Rising City who won by a 7-2 decision.  Stieb will wrestle in the consolation semifinals on Saturday morning.  Andy Cash of Ansley/Litchfield and Caden Zutavern of Sandhills/Thedford wrestled on different sides of the bracket in the Class D semifinals at 285 lbs.  Cash faced Collin Vrbka of Shelby-Rising City who won by fall and Zutavern faced Levi Gall of Clarkson/Leigh who won by a 6-5 decision.  Both Cash and Zutavern will wrestle in the consolation semifinals on Saturday.

Cazen Smith of Twin Loup fought through the consolation bracket on Friday to advance to the medal round on Saturday. Smith lost his opening round match but won three matches on Friday including a 6-4 decision over Luke Shoemaker of Central Valley in the third round consolations to advance.

Cozad has three wrestlers in the consolation semifinals.  Drake Hasbrouck at 138, Aaron Wilson at 150, and Brock Malcolm at 165.
