The SEM girls basketball team saw its season come to an end Wednesday night as they fell to Red Cloud in the Class D2 state quarterfinals. It was an entertaining back an forth game with SEM leading by two at the end of the first quarter. Red Cloud then took the lead by two at halftime and led 45-42 after three quarters. But in the fourth, Red Cloud was able to create a little separation outscoring SEM 17-11 in the final eight minutes to secure a 62-53 win. The three point shot was big for both teams. SEM made eight and Red Cloud knocked down nine from beyond the arc. SEM had three players finish in double figures led by Taryn Arbuthnot who finished with 19 points. Jaycelyn Hoos made five 3’s and finished with 17. Kyler Jones also finished in double figures for the Mustangs with 11. Red Cloud was led by sophomore Josie Faimon who finished with a game high 27 points. SEM concludes their season with an overall record of 13-10. Red Cloud advances to the state semifinals on Friday where they will face Wynot who outlasted Falls City Sacred Heart in an overtime thriller 54-49. On the other side of the D2 bracket, top seed Dundy County Stratton edged Loomis 37-36 and Archangels Catholic defeated Silver Lake 55-33.
