SEM Falls in Five Sets at State Volleyball Tournament

SEM fell in a five set heartbreaker to Bruning Davenport Shickley at the Class D1 state volleyball tournament Thursday at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln. It was a thrilling match that went back and forth. SEM jumped out first winning the opening set 27-25. BDS came back to tie the match winning set #2 25-19. BDS jumped out to a 16-6 lead in set #3 and then held on to win the set 25-23 after a furious SEM rally. In set #4, BDS again went in front early but SEM fought back and this time won the set 27-25 to tied the match 2-2. In set #5, BDS won the race to fifteen winning the set 15-7. Mikah O’Neill and Taryn Arbuthnot led the SEM offensive attack as they have all season. O’Neill finished with a team high 21 kills and Arbuthnot finished with 17. JessaLynn Hudson of BDS led all players with 26 kills in the match. BDS moves on to the semifinals where they will face top seed Norfolk Catholic who won in straight sets over Nebraska Christian (26-24, 25-15, 25-20). SEM concludes its season at 27-6 overall. On the other side of the D1 bracket, #2 seed Cambridge was upset by Cedar Catholic 3-2 (19-25, 30-32, 25-21, 25-14, 15-10). Cedar Catholic will face Maywood Hayes Center in the semifinals. MHC defeated Meridian 3-1 (18-25, 25-21, 25-14, 25-21).
