SEM will begin play at the NSAA boys state basketball championships in Lincoln today. The Mustangs are 20-5 this season and are making their first state tournament appearance since 2007. SEM qualified for state by winning the D2-5 district championship with a 46-43 victory over Creighton. The Mustangs are led in scoring by Kellen Eggleston who had 25 in the district final win and averages 13.6 points per game. SEM head coach Darby Line took time to visit with Central Nebraska’s Sports Source this week and said one of the things that has improved during the season and has been one of the keys to their success has been their defensive intensity.
SEM’s opponent today is Osceola. The Bulldogs are 23-3 on the season and feature two players, Kale Gustafson and Isaiah Zelasney, who each average just over 20 points per game. Coach Line said that the matchup will be a challenge but believes SEM’s depth could come into play and be an advantage for the Mustangs.
Today’s game is scheduled to tip off at 10:45 a.m. at Pinnacle Bank Arena with the winner advancing to the semifinals on Friday to face the winner of Wynot vs Paxton. Today’s game will be broadcast on KBBN 95.3 FM and on kbbn.com.
