Sandhills/Thedford Volleyball / Football Preview

The Sandhills/Thedford Knights were among the participants at the Custer County Chief Fall Sports Media Bash this past Sunday.

The Sandhills/Thedford football team took home the top prize last year winning the Class D2 state championship with a dominant 50-12 win over Wynot in the championship game.  Returning at quarterback for the Knights is Kyle Cox who had a record breaking performance in last year’s title game rushing for 486 yards.  The first team all state selection talked about the mindset of this year’s team following the jubilation of winning it all a season ago.

“I mean mostly I feel like we just look at it using that state championship as not satisfying our team but just pushing us to want to just work and get that back.  I don’t know ever since the day after the state championship we’ve just been looking forward to the next one.  We are ready to crack some pads.”

Sandhills/Thedford will open the season this Thursday night when they host Anselmo-Merna in Dunning.  The game will be broadcast on KBBN 95.3 FM and kbbn.com.  Kickoff for the game is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Sandhills/Thedford volleyball team is coming off a highly successful 2023 season that saw them win the MNAC tournament championship and qualify for a district final finishing with an overall record of 25-7.  While S/T graduated four seniors from last year’s team four starters return.  Senior outside hitter Karley Haake talked about the importance of communication and how they try to achieve that within their team.

“It’s a lot of vocal communication because obviously you have to communicate with each other and know who is going to pass the ball, set the ball, hit the ball.  A lot of it just comes with practice because you learn that trust.  It kind of becomes telepathic honestly.”

The Lady Knights are scheduled to open the season Thursday evening when they host Anselmo-Merna.
