The NSAA state wrestling championships begin today at the CHI Health Center in Omaha. After using a modified schedule for the tournament last year because of COVID concerns, the tournament is back to its traditional three day schedule this year. Competition begins this morning at 9:30 when classes B and C take the mats for opening round matches. Broken Bow will be among those competing in Class B. The Indians qualified 9 individuals for the state championships including Chauncey Watson (106), Wilson Cucul Tzin (113), Cyrus Wells (132), Connor Wells (138), Jack Myers (152), Max Denson (182), Cal Wells (195), Keifer Anderson (220), and Sawyer Bumgarner (285). Arcadia/Loup City will be represented in the Class C tournament by Chase Stieb at 170 lbs.
Classes A and D will take the mats for opening round matches at 4 p.m. today. Several from the KCNI/KBBN coverage area will be competing in Class D. Mullen qualified 9 individuals for the tournament, Twin Loup qualified six, and SEM qualified five. Anselmo-Merna and Ansley/Litchfield will each have three competing at today’s tournament. Defending state champion Reece Zutavern of Sandhills/Thedford will look for another gold medal as he competes at 195 lbs. South Loup will be represented by Rio Remund at 195 lbs.
For the first time, girls wrestling will be a part of this year’s state championships. The girls tournament will start on Friday.
