The National High School Finals Rodeo came to its conclusion Saturday in Lincoln, NE.
The KCNI/KBBN coverage area was represented well on Team Nebraska. Broken Bow’s Kelstyn Lindner competed in both the barebacks and bull riding. In the barebacks, Lindner put together two qualified rides scoring a 60 in the first go and following it up with a 63 in the 2nd go to finish in the top 30 of the average placing 28th overall. The bulls were tough to ride at the national finals with Lindner unable to register a qualified ride in his two attempts. Cooper Walker of Mullen also competed in the barebacks. After a no score in the first go, Walker came back with a qualified ride and a score of 60 in the second go.
Kallan Cox of Purdum competed in the barrels. Cox posted times of 18.12 in the first go and 18.11 in the 2nd go to finish 57th overall in the average. Brynne McCully of Mullen competed in the breakaway roping posting a time of 12.45 in the first go but a no time in the second go.
Tate Johnston of Thedford and Cody Marshall of Burwell each competed in the tie-down roping. After a no time on his first run, Johnston came back to post a time of 11.09 on his second run of the finals. Marshall posted times of 12.3 in the first go and 11.65 in the 2nd go to finish in the top 40 of the average placing 38th overall.
Cotter Johnston of Stapleton competed in the steer wrestling and got off to great start posting a time of 4.86 on his first run which had him sitting 6th overall after the first go round. Unfortunately, Johnston was not able to post a qualified time in the 2nd go but still finished in the top 60 of the average on the success of his opening time.
Some of the highlights for team Nebraska included Kanin Heath of Minden finishing in the top 10 of the barebacks placing 8th in the average with a total score of 210 on three qualified rides. Nebraska placed two cowgirls in the top five of the average in the pole bending. Kinsey Walz of Ainsworth placed fourth and Maci Herrington of Bassett was fifth. Callie Olson of Bloomfield placed in the top five of the reined cow horse competition finishing third overall in the average.
Team Texas swept the team titles at the national finals. Texas finished atop the girls, boys, and combined team standings. Team Nebraska had a solid showing finishing 12th in the girls standings, 11th in the boys, and 10th in the combined.
