Mullen Begins Play at the Boys State Basketball Tournament

The 2022 NSAA girls and boys state basketball championships continue today in Lincoln.  The Mullen boys begin play today in the Class D2 tournament.  Mullen is making its third straight appearance at the state tournament and its fifth appearance in the last six years.  The Broncos qualified for the tournament by defeating Potter-Dix in the Class D2-8 district championship game 52-37.  Mullen is now 18-8 on the season.  The Broncos will face Falls City Sacred Heart tonight in the state quarterfinals.  The two teams have played one another in each of the last two state tournaments.  Sacred Heart defeated Mullen in 2020 in the state semifinals and edged the Broncos 49-47 in the opening round of last year’s state tournament.  It has not been an easy road for the Broncos this season.  Mullen has had to play this season without starter Jaden Emerson due to injury.  Mullen head coach Brad Wright visited with KCNI/KBBN sports this past Friday and said the way the team has come together has made this state tournament appearance special.

Tonight’s game from Lincoln Southwest High School is scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on KBBN 95.3 FM and on kbbn.com.  The winner will advance to the state semifinals and play the winner of Hyannis vs Parkview Christian.  The other Class D2 quarterfinal matchups will feature St. Mary’s vs Shelton and Wynot vs Osceola.
