Mullen and Twin Loup Claim MNAC Titles

Champions were crowned at the Mid Nebraska Activities Conference girls and boys basketball tournaments held Saturday at North Platte Community College.

Mullen claimed the girls tournament title with a 42-33 come from behind win against top seed Anselmo-Merna.  Anselmo-Merna led 29-22 entering the 4th quarter but Mullen came storming back outscoring AM 20-4 in the 4th quarter.  Mullen took the lead 32-31 with 3:20 to play and never trailed from that point on.   The Lady Broncos were 10 of 14 from the free throw line in the final 8 minutes to help secure the win.  Mullen was led by Hayley Donohoe who had a game high 17 points.  Jenna Donohoe also finished in double figures with 10.  Seven players scored for Anselmo-Merna led by Shayleigh Coleman and Makenna Miller who each scored eight points.  With the win, Mullen improves to 14-1 on the season.

Twin Loup claimed the boys tournament title as they held off Sandhills Valley 53-47.  Twin Loup trailed by nine at the end of the first quarter.  In the second quarter, Twin Loup’s Yahya Harris caught fire scoring 18 of his game high 29 points to help Twin Loup come back and claim a two point lead at halftime.  The Wolves extended their lead to 36-28 at the end of the third.  Sandhills Valley fought back in the fourth but Twin Loup was able to hang on for the win.  Henry Sortum also finished in double figures for Twin Loup with 10 points.  Sandhills Valley had four players finish in double figures led by Kyle Kramer who finished with a team high 13 points.  With the win, Twin Loup improves to 13-5.

In other tournament action on Saturday, Brady edged Sandhills/Thedford in the girls 3rd place consolation game 46-43.  The Eagles were led by Payton Steinike who finished with a team high 15 points.  Laney Dahlberg of Sandhills/Thedford led all scorers with 17.  South Loup held off Sandhills/Thedford to win the boys 3rd place consolation game 49-38.  The Bobcats were led by Dylan Pandorf who had a game high 17 points.  Crew Witthuhn also finished in double figures for South Loup with 15.  Sandhills/Thedford was led by Maurice Robinson who finished with a team high nine points.
