Kallan Cox of Purdum and Cotter Johnston of Stapleton Crowned Nebraska High School Rodeo State Champions

The Nebraska state high school rodeo season came to its end over the weekend with the Nebraska state high school finals rodeo in Valentine.  Competitors tried to add to their season points total to finish in the top four of the final standings of their event to qualify for the national finals next month in Wyoming.  An area cowgirl and an area cowboy from the KCNI/KBBN coverage area were crowned state champion.

Kallan Cox of Purdum is this year’s barrel racing state champion.  Cox won the state finals rodeo with runs of 17.77 seconds in the first go on Thursday, 17.57 which was fastest in the second go on Friday, and 17.17 which was fastest in the short go on Saturday.  Cox finished atop the year end standings with 199 points to claim the state title and advance to nationals.

Area cowboy Cotter Johnston of Stapleton claimed the state championship in the steer wrestling.  Johnston won the state finals rodeo with runs of 6.26 seconds in the first go, 6.42 in the 2nd go, and 4.88 which was fastest in the short go on Saturday.  Johnston finished atop the year end standings in the event with 196.5 points to claim the state title and advance to nationals.

The National High School Finals Rodeo is scheduled for July 13th – 19th at Rock Springs, WY.
