High School Rodeo Contestants Busy Over Holiday Weekend

Nebraska High School Rodeo contestants were busy during the holiday weekend with rodeos at the Nuckolls County Fairgrounds on Saturday and Sunday and a rodeo in Grand Island on Monday.

Area highlights on Saturday included a first place finish by Tate Johnston of Thedford in the steer wrestling with a winning time of 6.86 seconds. Other top five finishes from cowboys and cowgirls in the KCNI/KBBN coverage area included Emmett Sortum of Burwell third in the tie down roping, and Kallan Cox of Purdum was fifth in the pole bending.

On Sunday, area highlights included a top five finish by Tate Johnston of Thedford with partner JT Lantis of Hershey who were third in the team roping. Other top five area finishes included Carson Cooksley of Elsmere runner-up in the steer wrestling and Kallan Cox of Purdum was runner-up in the barrel racing. Gracie Pearson of Broken Bow placed fifth in the girls cutting and was fourth in barrels on Sunday.

Area highlights in Grand Island on Monday included Dawson Doggett of Callaway winning the steer wrestling in a time of 7.2 seconds and Haylea Miller of Merna won the girls cutting with a score of 71.5. Other top five finishes from the area Monday, in the tie down roping, Colton Leach of Dunning was runner-up, Emmett Sortum of Burwell was fourth, and Cayson Johnston of Stapleton was fifth. Carson Cooksley of Elsmere was fourth in the steer wrestling and Ella Switzer of Burwell placed fourth in the pole bending.
