The Broken Bow football team opened the season against Chadron Friday night at Mark Russell Field. After Chadron jumped out in front 6-0, Broken Bow took advantage of a Chadron turnover. After an interception by Cash Kleeb, Ayden Clark broke loose for a 20 yard touchdown run to tie the game 6-6. Less than a minute later, Chadron’s Tobin Landen hooked up with Braden Wright on a 92 yard touchdown pass to make the score 12-6 at halftime. In the second half, the teams had to endure a lengthy weather delay. After play resumed, neither team was able to put together a scoring drive as Chadron held on for a 12-6 win. Broken Bow will go on the road next Friday to face Ogallala. Ogallala fell to Gothenburg in their season opener 28-11.
Anselmo-Merna hosted Sandhills/Thedford for the season opener Friday night at Clark Adams Field in Merna. Sandhills/Thedford led 28-22 at the half. Following a weather delay, Maurice Robinson scored on a 15 yard touchdown run with 2:52 remaining in the third quarter to extend Sandhills/Thedford’s lead to 34-22. Anselmo-Merna would mount a comeback in the 4th quarter. Dane Duryea scored on a 3 yard touchdown run to make the score 34-30 following a successful two point conversion. Then, with 3:09 left in the game, Duryea scored on a 14 yard touchdown run to give AM the lead 36-34. The Anselmo-Merna defense held Sandhills/Thedford scoreless in the 4th quarter to collect the win. Duryea finished with four rushing touchdowns and a touchdown pass for the Coyotes. Carter Anderson had two touchdown runs and two touchdown passes for the Knights.
